It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to post some new pictures, and while I haven’t shot much in that time, I did get a few opportunities. These images come from Pebble Beach, California, in August. During a rare (for that region) warm evening, I drove down 17 Mile Drive, admiring the nighttime sights on the coast. This series of long exposures comes from that evening on that famous road.

For the first two images, I employed a technique known as light painting to illuminate the foreground. This technique involves using a flashlight to “paint” light onto a scene to reveal details that would otherwise be too dark to distinguish. By varying the brightness, angle, and color of the light, as well as how long it is shined on a particular surface, unique and interesting patterns can be achieved.
